Chevrolet Volt 2011

The Chevrolet Volt is a front-wheel-drive hatchback sedan that features a revolutionary electric powertrain with a built-in travel-insurance policy in the form of a gasoline-engine generator.

The Chevrolet Volt concept is simple. The onboard batteries power the electric motor for about 40 miles of combined city/highway driving, after which a 1.4-liter, four-cylinder, gasoline generator engine is used to charge the lithium-ion battery pack.

Since the Chevrolet Volt is electrically powered, there's no transmission per se, but it uses a single-speed controller to engage the drive wheels. However, the operator can select Normal, Sport or Mountain mode with the latter providing extra power on steep grades.

GM estimates that the energy consumed by recharging the batteries on a daily basis won't exceed the amount used by a typical refrigerator.

The Chevrolet Volt replaces typical instrumentation with a screen that, among other things, provides the driver with the total range remaining as well as battery life, fuel level and average fuel economy.

Beyond electric operation, the Chevrolet Volt is really just like any other car you might buy. Standard features include climate control, cruise control, premium Bose audio system, navigation package, and eight standard airbags.

The Chevrolet Volt is an electric vehicle that gives you the freedom to drive wherever you want, whenever you want. With the Chevrolet Volt’s extended-range capability, you can drive electrically up to 340 miles on a full battery and tank of gas, with up to the first 40 miles powered by electricity from the grid. Plus, the Chevrolet Volt comes standard with an unprecedented battery warranty – eight years or 100,000 miles on all 161 battery components, the thermal management system, charging system and electric drive components. It will also be the first Chevrolet vehicle to offer, at no additional cost, five years of OnStar Directions and Connections service, which includes automatic crash response, stolen vehicle assistance and connected navigation.

And speaking of OnStar, the Chevrolet Volt gives you an unprecedented level of connectivity with the Chevrolet Connect mobile app by OnStar. This Volt mobile and web-based app will allow you to set the charge time, start your Chevrolet Volt, track mileage, unlock the doors and much more from your smart phone and even your home computer.

In fact, the personalized and connected ownership experience is just getting into full swing when you take delivery of your Chevrolet Volt because Chevrolet is creating a website designed specifically for Volt owners to collect diagnostic information as well as track and share your vehicle’s performance.

Chevrolet Volt's Battery Warranty

After years of speculation, Chevrolet has finally announced the terms of the warranty on the Chevrolet Volt’s lithium ion battery pack; eight years/100,000 miles.
The 16 total kwh pack stores sufficient energy in a band from roughly 30% to 80% state-of-charge to propel the Chevrolet Volt for up to 40 miles at ambient temperature and with moderate driving style.

Since first working with the LG Chem lithium-manganese spinel cells in October 2007, Chevrolet has definitively proven their safe and robust nature. In these nearly three years of testing, Chevrolet has completed more than 1 million miles of driving and 4 million hours of validation of Chevrolet Volt battery packs, which include exactly nine modules and 288 cells.
“The Chevrolet Volt’s batteries have exceeded our performance targets and are ready to hit the road,” said Chevrolet executive director, global electrical systems. “Our customers are making a commitment to technology that will help reduce our dependence on petroleum. In turn, we are making a commitment to our customers to deliver the highest standards for value, safety, quality, performance and reliability for an unprecedented eight years/100,000 miles.”

Chevrolet stresses the following key features of the Chevrolet Volt’s battery that allow this unprecedented in the industry warranty:

Thermal Management: the intrinsic thermal management system allows the pack and the Chevrolet Volt to operate flawlessly from -13 degrees Fahrenheit (-25 C) and as high as 122 degrees Fahrenheit (+50 C). In cold weather the cells are warmed by the generator and in warm weather they are chilled.

Diagnostics: there are more than 500 diagnostic tests on the pack that run 10 times per second. 85 percent ensure the pack is operating safely, 15 percent ensure durability.
Cell design: the LG chemistry ensures high power and long life.

Energy Management: by not fully charging or discharging the battery ensures the longest possible life.

Chevrolet is on track to deliver the Chevrolet Volt to customers later this year.
“We’re moving fast to deliver for the customer and ensure the Chevrolet Volt launch stays on track,” said the plant manager of the Battery Plant. “Last August we announced the investment in the facility and in January built our first completed battery pack. Now we are finishing pre-production batteries and soon we will begin building production batteries for Chevrolet Volts that will be delivered to dealers before the end of the year.”

In addition to this battery warranty, Chevrolet is also offering the following additional warranties on the Chevrolet Volt:

* 100,000 mile/5-year transferable Engine Limited Warranty (for Range Extender)

* 100,000 mile/5-year 24/7 Roadside Assistance Program

* 100,000 mile/5-year 24/7 Courtesy Transportation Program

* 36,000 mile/ 3-year no deductible Bumper-to-Bumper transferable warranty

* 100,000 mile/6-year corrosion protection

GMC and Chevrolet Cars of the Year

The award is presented annually by a jury of ten automotive authorities in the Middle East and around the world consisting of leading automotive journalists and other industry experts.

According to Publishing Director RMS magazines and Editor-in-Chief Middle East Car, Philip Moore, 'The jury found the all-new, comprehensively redesigned GMC Acadia and Suburban and Chevrolet Caprice and Corvette Z06 like no other vehicles in their class, delivering an unprecedented experience,' said Moore. 'These vehicles are truly leaders in their category - where buyers no longer need to sacrifice performance and style for utility.'

This is the first time the influential Middle East Car magazine has presented Car of the Year Awards. Philip Moore continued, 'The publication had been responding to requests from the market and the COTYs would be an annual event from now on'.

The all-new 2007 GMC Acadia, winner of the 'Best Crossover' award, was designed to add a new dimension to the fastest growing-vehicle segment in the Middle East offering superior levels of comfort, versatility and performance.
Sharing familial design cues with GMC's other all-new full-size SUVs, the Acadia features styling that underscores GMC's professional grade philosophy. The exterior profile of the Acadia is sporty, sleek and aerodynamic while its interior reflects style and refinement. The GMC Acadia GMC's first CUV takes the best aspects of the class and melds them together intelligently, and with more style.

The all new 2007 GMC Suburban, winner of Middle East Car's 'Lifetime Achievement' award, is the latest generation of the industry's most versatile and capable full-size SUV. It is based on GM's new, full-size SUV architecture, featuring sleek exterior styling, a sharper, more precise driving feel, more power with improved, segment-leading fuel economy, increased interior refinement and improved quietness.

'GM is a powerhouse in the Middle East, notching record sales on the back of some fine product. This was reflected when the votes were tallied. GM innovates while keeping an eye on auto traditions and traditions of the Middle East, which was clearly evident in our special Lifetime Achievement award for an industry icon, the Suburban. This award will not necessarily be presented each year, only when the situation warrants it.'

Terry Johnsson, President, General Motors Middle East Operations, said: 'The 2007 Acadia and Suburban reinforce that the GMC brand is all about exceeding expectations. GMC has long been a trusted brand in the Middle East and our customers are drawn to the precision, power and capabilities of what the brand offers. And now, the line-up is expanding to offer more professional grade vehicles to suit everyday demanding lifestyles.'

The new 2007 Chevrolet Caprice, winner of Best LWB Executive Car, balances great proportions, world class exterior and interior styling, and creative design elements to give a stately stance on the road. Reinforcing Caprice's generous heritage, the all-new Caprice makes its own statement about what a large sedan should be. With its advanced technologies and functional, user-friendly features, the 2007 Chevrolet Caprice is stronger and better equipped than ever before.

The 2007 Caprice is set to build on the success and tradition of its predecessor as one of the legends of the regional car market, maintaining its pre-eminence as the car of choice among statesmen, government officials, business executives and large families.

The 2007 Chevrolet Corvette Z06, the fastest, most powerful production Corvette ever built, won the 'Best Muscle Car' award. It is also the fastest, most powerful production car ever offered by General Motors, making it one of the best performance values on the market - better than many of today's 'super-

cars'. The Z06's LS7 7.0 litre engine delivers 505 horsepower in a 1,421 kg package - a combination that delivers 0-100 km/h performance of 3.7 seconds in first gear, quarter-mile times of 11.7 seconds at 200 km/h and a top speed of 317 km/h.

'Chevrolet's reputation for reliability and for driveability has ensured that our heritage has developed into the success we see today with our expanded product portfolio,' said Terry Johnsson. 'Our strategy is to continue to maximize our global resources to bring great new cars and SUVs to the region and to compete in all-new segments under the Chevrolet brand.'

Moore concluded, 'The COTY awards have several functions. One is to salute every single person involved in providing vehicles to consumers in the Middle East. We have taken a long time to decide to give awards because we take such a matter very seriously. We salute all finalists and winners. There would always be a modicum of disappointment from some that they might not have won COTY'.

The recognition marks another milestone for the GMC and Chevrolet brands in the Middle East, coming at a time when the appeal of the brands and sales are at an all time high.
